Basic Safety Tips for Storms
Always have an Emergency First Aid Kit available, also a portable generator (when possible), food, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, cell phone, cell phone power cords, portable power charger, portable radio/NOAA capabilities, some type of identification and cash.

Always replenish your supplies, especially food and water. Also, check flashlights and batteries.
Have an Emergency Plan ready and make sure all family members know it. Review it every six months. These plans are very important, especially if a family member needs medical care.
Have all medications available, baby food if there are infants in the family, clothing for all weather conditions and a heat source when needed.
Residences that have well water should have sufficient water supply just in case the electric water pump goes out.
Stay away from all down power lines and water puddles the are near them.
If your are in an automobile and a power line is draped over your car, call 911 if possible and wait for help to arrive. If it becomes too dangerous and the situation becomes life threatening, exit the automobile by leaping as best you can away form the automobile. Make sure that both feet are on the ground and get far away from the automobile. Do not touch the automobile.

All Thunderstorms produce lightning and are dangerous. Whenever thunder is heard, lighting becomes a possibility. Up to one hundred people a year are killed by lightning strikes and being outside is the most dangerous place to be. Local TV and radio stations will have the most updated information on storms in your local area.
Whenever a Thunderstorm Watch is issued in your local area, this means there is a possibility of Thunderstorms.
Whenever a Thunderstorm Warning is issued in your local area, this means that thunderstorms are actually taking place and to seek shelter.
When outside and there is a chance of thunderstorms. make sure you keep an eye on the sky. If it becomes dark and flashes are observed with increasing winds, these are signs that a storm is coming. Do not wait for it to start raining. When thunder is heard seek a safe shelter. (a building or an automobile, make sure the windows are up in the automobile) Do not seek shelter under bleachers, outdoor pavilions, under a tree or in baseball dugouts.
If you can not find the proper shelter, try to find an open area that is far away from trees, squat down with both feet together and place your hands over ears. If you are with a large group of people, stay away from one another at least 15 feet or more. Do not stand in any type of water and do not take part in any water activities. Stay out of the water.
Stay away from anything that is comprised of metal.
After the storm has passed wait at lease 30 minutes before resuming any outdoor activities
